With every industry, there are horror stories. Recently there have been many stories in the news regarding high-profile photographers preying on new models. Stories of photographers offering the models international fame and fortune in return for topless pictures and sexual favors. These isolated incidents may seem like they are a million miles away from supportive model communities but there are a large number of new models who have been the victim of sexually inappropriate behaviour on shoots.

GWC – Guy With Camera Syndrome With the explosion of photography courses and easy access to digital cameras there are many creeps lurking on networking sites looking out for new easy targets. People posing as semi/professional photographers offering free test shoots in their ‘studios’. Numerous models have complained that a GWC has suggested an isolated location and then pushed the model to try nude or topless photography, have stripped off themselves or been sexually inappropriate. On these sites you are leaving yourself open to this sort of behaviour, so you need to be careful. New freelance models are at most risk so here are some safety tips for your career.

When organizing a photo shoot with someone that has contacted you online or through a site like ‘Model Mayhem’ review the photographer’s gallery thoroughly and ask yourself some questions:
Does this look like the work of just one photographer or could these images be stock images pulled off the internet? Are the photographs of a professional nature? Are the images high quality? Does the photographer have any testimonials from previous models?

If you feel that the shoot is appropriate and safe then think about your travel arrangements.
Do you know how to safely get to and from the location? Is the location in a particularly isolated place and will there be anyone else there? Try and make sure there is a team that you are working with – let’s face it – unless you have been recommended the photographer, you are just meeting up with a stranger.
If you feel nervous then take a friend or agent with you. Someone who doesn’t mind sitting in the corner for a few hours. Tell someone where you are and create some sort of code word – if you answer a call and have an innocent conversation dropping in a code word then someone can come and help you! DO NOT BE AFRAID TO SAY NO! If a photographer is demanding you do topless work or ‘artistic nude’ and you aren’t interested in that sort of work then say no.
Do not be forced into anything you are not comfortable with!

Another common problem becoming a model in the modelling industry is, of course, eating disorders. Many models feel they should drop a few pounds for a photoshoot or show and will work hard, long days without eating onset. Always bring a snack and an energy drink with you to ensure that you don’t faint or become rundown – especially if you are working in a catwalk.
If an agent or casting director tells you to lose weight and you agree then hit the gym and eat healthily – don’t bother with crash diets or crazy fads. Know your own body and be confident with it. Fad diets will also often ruin your skin and make you age faster – so you shortening your own career!
